IT Governance

The IT governance model covers the topics which an enterprise has to take into account for controlling IT. In this context the operational management utilizes processes for the organization and management of the activities. A generic model is provided, based on best practices such as COBIT or ITIL®, containing all the activities and responsibilities to be found in the IT. This creates the link between operational management, the executing levels and the control level. The task is to ensure the following core areas of the governance:

  • Strategic Alignment
    • Alignment of the business and IT strategy with regard to the definition as well as the review of and improvement in IT’s contribution to value.
  • Value Delivery
    • Within their service cycle, IT services in their entirety bring a benefit in respect of the corporate strategy and generate added value for the enterprise.
  • Resource Management
    • Efficient use of resources such as applications, information, infrastructure and people, as well as optimization of the investment.
  • Risk Management
    • Identification and analysis of the risks in order to avoid unpleasant surprises and to gain a clear understanding of the company’s risk preference.
  • Performance Management
    • Monitoring and control of all performances in terms of their orientation towards the corporate strategy.

For the purpose of formulating and implementing an IT governance strategy it is normally recommended that work be carried out in conjunction with a specialist in this field who will bring to this type of project both the corresponding know-how and the necessary foundation and in the best case even tools, as well as an objective viewpoint.
